CALL FOR ANALYTICAL & RESEARCH PAPERS

The Vienna International Institute on Middle East Studies (VIIMES) is seeking to benefit from the valuable views and thoughts of top scholars from diverse disciplines and academic circles, in order to achieve its ultimate goal of Peace and Prosperity throughout the Middle East and around the world. In this context, the Institute welcomes papers in a series of relevant areas, including:

  • Impacts of Changing Political Dynamics on Nuclear-Weapons-Free Zone in the Middle East.
  • Refugee Crisis in the Middle East.
  • Climate Change Challenges, water crisis in the Middle East in specific.
  • Role of Middle East in Current Global Energy Equation.
  • Proposals for the Settlement of Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen.
  • Humanitarian Consequences of 4 decades of Occupation in Afghanistan.
  • Regional Dialogue Forum on Persian Gulf.
  • Ongoing mutations on international order and their impact in the ME: Role of regional actors.
  • Mid- and long-term Impacts of the war in Ukraine on developments in West Asian Region – with a focus on security developments (new security arrangements).
  • The future perspective of ongoing developments in Yemen: Towards separation (Northern and Southern Yemen) or the establishment of an authoritarian central government in a single integrated Yemen.
  • Future Research on emergence of the second wave of Arab Spring in the region: considering increased social frustration in countries of the region.
  • State building challenges in Iraq.
  • GCC’s alternative approach under the shadow of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan and the region.
  • Prospects of rivalry between the US and China in the area of the 5th generation internet in the Middle East region.
  • Gas exploration in the eastern Mediterranean: Lebanese and Israeli joint field.

 

The experts are expected to think out of the box and to propose innovative ideas that further enhance and develop our understanding of the Middle East, its bottlenecks together with their solutions. Since diversity matters, we are especially keen to hear voices from different political experts and academia with different technical expertise in the world.

All authors / experts are requested to provide the Institute with their initial abstract together with their CV. Upon submission, she/he will be informed of the relevance and approval of the abstract within 14 working days. Those whose abstract is accepted, will then be requested to provide their full paper at a mutually agreed upon timeline. This allows the distinguished Members of the Advisory Board for a thorough review of the research papers within a month. Final approved papers will be published in a scientific journal of the Institute and, if appropriate, appear on the VIIMES’ Website. The best paper, selected by the referees, will be awarded, receiving special remuneration from the Institute.

Ambassador Soltanieh

Born on 1st October 1950, Ambassador Ali Asghar Soltanieh as nuclear scientist and multilateral diplomat has been active as participant/guest speaker in over 200 international and regional conferences, specifically on international security, WMD Non- proliferation and Disarmament since 1982.
He has served two times as the Resident Representative to the IAEA (1982-87; 2006-2013). During the first mission to the IAEA, he was simultaneously the Chief Negotiator and Head of Delegation to the United Nations Conference on Promotion of International Cooperation on Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy (PUNE). He has been fully involved in the NPT conferences since 1982.
He served as Ambassador to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva (1999-2002) & Vienna (2006-2013).
While serving as DPR in Geneva (1999-2002), he was the Chief Negotiator on the Protocol of Biological Weapons Convention as well as delegate to the Conference of Disarmament (CD).
